Leading independent law firm Harper Macleod has increased its share of corporate transactions completed in Scotland, according to independent analysis published today (29 August 2023).

Harper Macleod has maintained its strong level of activity and grown its proportion of overall deals where it was the principal advisor, while the volume of deals reported by some other advisors has dropped considerably.

According to Scottish Business Insider’s directory of deals completed, Harper Macleod was involved in 19% of all reported transactions in the last 12 months (153 transactions out of a total of 793 reported) compared to 13% the previous year (155 transactions out of a total of 1190 reported).

The types of deals listed include acquisitions and sales, new issues, MBOs and MBIs, and joint ventures. Harper Macleod is the leading advisor in several categories including demergers, reconstructions, PFI, PPP and NPD, and mergers.

Donnie Munro, head of Harper Macleod’s corporate, commercial and regulatory team, said: “This analysis shows the extent to which we are embedded within corporate Scotland. Our position in these rankings has been rising for the last 10 years. We’ve continued to invest in the skills and resources to meet the needs of domestic and international clients.

“This is an opportunity to thank our clients for placing their trust in us to advise them, and other advisors with which we partner.

“At the start of the year there was a feeling of uncertainty in the market as business owners, investors and other advisors wrestled with the three-pronged challenge of Brexit, global conflict and rising inflation.

“Those challenges haven’t gone away. However, the Scottish economy has shown itself to be resilient, diverse and attractive for both domestic operators looking to start or grow their businesses, and  international interest in the form of expansion and investment.”
