Leading law firm Harper Macleod is extending its successful partnership with Scottish ClubSport, the umbrella organisation for local sports councils and ClubSport networks across Scotland.

The firm will be the headline partner for Scottish ClubSport’s Annual Conference in September, the title for which is “Capacity Building in Community and Club Sport”.

Harper Macleod’s support of Scottish ClubSport complements the firm’s ongoing commitment to community and grassroots sports participation. The firm has longstanding relationships with Glasgow Warriors and Highland Rugby Club. Harper Macleod is the legal adviser to sportscotland, which includes the provision of a legal helpline for Scottish sports governing bodies. It was the official legal adviser to the Glasgow 2018 European Championships and 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Kelly Fraser, a senior associate in the firm’s sports team, will address the conference. Kelly will share the latest legislative insights concerning sports bodies, as well as the issues on governance and succession planning affecting sports clubs, looking at structures and supporting volunteers.

Kelly is the legal helpline manager for sportscotland’s expert resource framework for Scottish sports governing bodies (SGBs) and her principal areas of expertise are governance, regulatory and data use. Kelly has trained hundreds of people within the Scottish sports community, across almost all SGBs on data protection in sport.

Kelly said:

“Grassroots and community sports clubs have such a vital role to play in our society, and we are very proud to play our part to support those bodies in everything they achieve. Sports clubs and, in turn, sporting bodies and councils, often rely on volunteer support who give up their time because of their love of their chosen sport. Where we can help is to advise those bodies on a wide range of legal matters such as inclusion, participation and equality.

“We first worked with Scottish ClubSport last year, at a time when many sporting bodies across Scotland were wrestling with the challenges presented by covid restrictions. Some of those challenges haven’t disappeared, but Scottish sport is emerging stronger on many levels, and we are very pleased to continue to work with Scottish ClubSport at this important time for bodies up and down the country.”

Gary Grieve, National Development Manager at Scottish ClubSport, said: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with Harper Macleod. The firm’s support, through this year’s conference and with some additional activity before and after, will enhance the resource and guidance that we are able to share with our members and provide the much-needed help that local clubs and volunteers require to support their recovery from the pandemic and build for the future”
