A well-known Glasgow restaurateur has grown his footprint in the city with the acquisition of a neighbouring Italian institution.

Romano Perella, owner of Amore Ristorante e Pizzeria, has acquired the popular Mediterraneo restaurant, both on Ingram Street in Glasgow’s Merchant City, with plans to invest in its refurbishment in the coming months.

Mediterraneo has been a fixture on Glasgow’s dining scene for 15 years, located on the ground floor of a Category B-listed Italianate warehouse.

Romano was supported in the acquisition by Leandro Franchi, a partner at law firm Harper Macleod. Leandro has advised the family business for more than 30 years.

Romano and his father, Eufemio, established Amore in 2008, and also own and operate Amore d’Italia in Dennistoun, Salt & Vinegar in Shawlands and The Italian Caffe.

Romano said: “Despite being a competitor, we’ve long admired Mediterraneo as a longstanding and quality establishment in Glasgow’s dining scene. When the opportunity came up to acquire the business, we knew this would be a fantastic addition, with the chance to further enhance Mediterraneo’s outstanding reputation.

“We’ve already taken steps to invest in the restaurant and look at a change of concept. Glasgow’s food scene is vibrant and changing, and there is always demand for the high quality experience Mediterraneo has delivered for many years, but with some little tweaks to suit what diners are looking for.”

Leandro Franchi, a partner at law firm Harper Macleod, advised Romano on the acquisition. Leandro said: “Romano and Eufemio are champions for Glasgow’s hospitality industry and have established a number of well-known restaurants across the city. Mediterraneo already has a strong reputation which I’m sure will only be enhanced with father and son at the helm.

“The hospitality sector has to constantly adapt to today’s dining trends. The sector has not had its challenges to seek as customers look for value, quality and a memorable experience. Romano and Eufemio have a long track record of delivering excellent food for their loyal customers, and I am sure Mediterraneo will go from strength to strength.”
