Chris is a consultant with Harper Macleod having retired as a partner at the end of October 2017. He is now based mainly in our Edinburgh office but visits Shetland regularly. He practised in Shetland for over 30 years. He has extensive experience of all aspects of legal practice in Shetland. He built up with the other partners in Dowle, Smith and Rutherford in the course of his legal career a strong presence in the Shetland legal landscape. He has an in-depth knowledge of many aspects of the Shetland economy, including crofting, fish-farming and renewables. He has advised many important public sector and private organisations in Shetland during this time.
His legal expertise includes handling property sales and purchases, executry work, local business sales and purchases, leasing, wills and powers of attorney. He has a special interest in the ever-changing law and practice relating to crofting, and its implications for development in rural parts of Shetland.
He has appeared in the Sheriff Court as both defence agent and civil litigator since 1984. He has considerable experience in divorce work and other aspects of family law.
