Passion for Sport
Creating a sporting legacy
There are probably two things that Harper Macleod is best known for.
One is being an entrepreneurial law firm which quickly became one of Scotland’s leading legal names. The other is our involvement in sport, in all shapes and sizes.
For more than 20 years we have been recognised as Scotland’s leading sports law firm, advising on every aspect of the law as it relates to the sporting world.
Playing our part in the game
However, our involvement in sport doesn’t stop at the front door of our offices – it’s part of the firm’s DNA. That's why we've always had fantastic associations with some of the leading events, individuals, clubs and organisations across Scotland - from the Glasgow 2018 European Championships and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games to the Glasgow Warriors.
We believe our sporting involvement has contributed massively to our culture and success. Like any competitor or athlete The next challenge is always around the corner, which is why we are constantly adapting, learning and improving as we strive to be the firm of choice for businesses and individuals.
Here are some of the highlights of our participation in sport.
“Harper Macleod has long been a trailblazer for sports law in Scotland, and it remains the undisputed heavyweight of Scottish sports law." CHAMBERS UK
Official Sponsors of Glasgow Warriors
We are Official Sponsors of Glasgow Warriors, the leading professional rugby team in Scotland who won the Pro12 Championship in 2015 and reached the semi-finals in 2016 and 2018 - the latter when the competition expanded to Pro14.
At the club’s Scotstoun Stadium home, the Harper Macleod Club Deck welcomes around 200 guests at each match, while the Harper Macleod West Stand is home to a large section of the Warrior Nation also know as the #WestStandWarriors. In September 2019 Harper Macleod announced it would extend the sponsorship of Glasgow Warriors until 2021.

Glasgow 2018 European Championships
In early 2017 the firm made a splash in the world of sport when we were appointed Legal Adviser to the Glasgow 2018 European Championships – an exciting new multi-sport event that brings together some of Europe’s leading competitions.
Our appointment built on the similar role we carried out for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The announcement was made at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, where Britain’s Olympic silver medal winning swimmer Dan Wallace took to the starting blocks alongside our Chief Executive Martin Darroch and Glasgow 2018 Championships Director Colin Hartley.
To be staged every four years, the European Championships combined the existing European Championships of Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon along with a new Golf team championships. The first edition saw a unique sporting partnership between Host Cities Glasgow and Berlin attract huge TV audiences and great attendances at venues across the country.
The appointment built on the firm's outstanding track record of advising on the delivery of large-scale sporting and cultural events.
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games
One highlight our involvement to date came with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – the largest multi-sport and cultural event ever to take place in Scotland.
Back in 2011 we were the very first sponsors of Glasgow 2014, and as Legal Advisers to the event helped to deliver what has been regarded as the most successful Commonwealth Games ever.
While the work we carried out was important, it was also a great platform for the firm to get involved and be part of the cultural experience.

In the build up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games we selected a 17-year-old wheelchair racer, who had set her sights on competing at Hampden Park, to be the firm's Athlete Ambassador for the Games.
Over the next four years we supported Samantha 'Sammi' Kinghorn as she went on to achieve her dreams, becoming a double World Champion, triple European champion and a Paralympian.
We were honoured to play a small part in her journey.
Below, you can view the beautiful film we made with Sammi in the build up to Glasgow 2014.
In touch with rugby
If one sport in particular has run through our history, it has to be rugby.
Our Chairman Professor Lorne Crerar is a former player and referee who becane a leading figure in the sport’s disciplinary world. Ranked as Scotland’s only ‘Eminent Practitioner’ in sports law, he was until 2017 Chairman of the European Rugby Cup Tournament and was a Judicial Officer at the Rugby World Cup 2015, as well as officiating at the inaugural 7s tournament at the Rio Olympics.
Lorne was also the principal adviser to the SRU in relation to disciplinary issues and chairman of the Discipline Panels for SRU, European Rugby Cup and 6Nations. He was an IRB "elite judge" and also the Judicial Officer for the Rugby World Cup Final in both 2015 and 2011.
His lead saw many of the firm’s Partners and solicitors involved in the world of sport – creating it as a legal practice area in this country and staying ahead of all the competition.

A smorgasbord of sport
While football and rugby tend to grab the headlines in the world of Scottish sport, our involvement goes much further.
We are the Official Legal Advisers to Scottish Swimming, one of the country’s most successful sports in terms of winning medals and major international competition.
We have a strong connection with sportscotland, the national agency for sport, and advise many of its member governing bodies through its expert resource framework.
And in 2015 we supported the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame as it inducted five new national icons, including Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Ian McGeechan, at Kelvingrove Art Gallery.
