Our services

Manufacturing businesses are an underappreciated part of Scotland’s rural economy, generating exports and supporting thousands of jobs both directly and indirectly. We understand the challenges that manufacturers across all sectors face and also the opportunities that exist. We’ll help you overcome the former, and take full advantage of the latter.

Tourism and leisure

Tourism and leisure covers a diverse range of businesses, organisations and individuals in rural Scotland. We offer a one-stop shop for those in the sector, from bars and restaurants and hotels to tourist attractions, from the music, film and TV industries to nightclubs, and from bookmakers and bingo halls to sports clubs. Our team calls upon substantial expertise in every legal discipline, including licensing, property, corporate, banking & finance, employment, branding and technology.

Food & Drink

Our dedicated Food & Drink team advises businesses of all shapes and sizes in an industry that was worth more than £16 billion to Scotland’s economy in 2017. From startups and microbreweries to some of the biggest producers, suppliers, manufacturers and retailers in the country, we provide a full service which caters for your every legal requirement.

We advise many businesses and organisations operating in distribution activity, including via road, haulage, rail and shipping. Our team has specialists in every area of law to offer a comprehensive service across both the public and private sectors. Clients include transport operators and agencies, funders, local authorities, hauliers and freight forwarders. We also have extensive experience in shipping and marine transport, particularly in relation to ferry operations.

Onshore energy

Our award-winning renewable energy team is one of the largest in Scotland, providing advice on all types of renewable energy projects, including onshore wind, hydro, marine and off-shore wind, solar and renewable heat.
We understand the distinct challenges you face in particular locations and are able to advise on projects of all sizes, from advising on smaller projects for individuals, Feed-in Tariff developers, estates and community groups to acting on behalf of utilities and major independents on large-scale onshore and offshore projects.
We advise on every aspect of a renewable energy project, from planning, property and construction to advice on securing funding, taking advantage of incentives and grid and power purchase agreements.

Dealing with public administration and government agencies

Our Public Sector team is one of Scotland’s leading practices, acting for a wide range of public authorities as well as those in the private sector who interact with the public sector. We provide a full range of legal, regulatory, strategic and commercial advice, helping deliver services in an increasingly challenging environment. Our in-depth understanding of the public sector gives us an unrivalled perspective and understanding of the key priorities for public authorities and what they need from their external suppliers.

Social enterprises and new business models

Social enterprises encompass a wide variety of organisations which share the characteristic of being innovative, independent businesses that exist to deliver a specific social and/or environmental mission. All their profits go towards their mission. A large percentage of social enterprises are based in the rural areas particularly the Highlands and Islands, which has 22% of Scotland’s social enterprises compared to 9% of the population. Social enterprises include development trusts (who we act for in both community renewables and other community projects), charities, community interest companies and other third sector groups.
We provide specialist legal, regulatory and commercial advice, ensuring that our clients are able to meet their charitable or social objectives whilst also complying with all of their obligations.
