Occupational asthma is a lung disease and type of asthma. Like other types of asthma, it is characterised by airway inflammation, reversible airways obstruction, and bronchospasm, but it is caused by something in the workplace environment.
People who suffer from asthma are likely to experience breathing difficulties along with coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. The condition is a very serious health problem for those who suffer with it.
Asthma can be caused by workplace exposure as a result of breathing in certain dusts, gases, fumes and vapours that, in turn, damage your lungs.
If your asthma has developed in later life, it may be as a result of something in your workplace:
- Is your asthma worse during the working week?
- Does the condition wear off at the weekends and whilst on annual leave?
- Does the condition get worse whilst at work or immediately upon leaving?
Employers have a duty to protect their workers against the risks of occupational asthma and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations require employers to ensure that hazardous substances are controlled.
