Marine Economy Week 2023

Harper Macleod’s third annual Marine Economy Week examined a wide range of aspects of Scotland’s diverse maritime industry.

The marine sector is a fundamental part of Scotland’s natural capital, a major contributor to the economy, and plays a vital role in our efforts to tackle climate change.

This year we were joined by a range of experts to discuss the key topics.

We kicked off the week by taking a look back at the last 12 months. We highlighted some of the main developments and events in areas such as our ports & harbours, offshore renewables & natural capital, and fishing, aquaculture and vessels. You can catch up on all sessions below.

Christopher Kerr is joined by Tavish Scott, chief executive of Salmon Scotland, Brian Isbister, chief executive of the Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation, and Andy Read, editor of Fishing News. In a wide-ranging discussion we covered issues such as innovation, HPMAs, sustainability, market consolidation, succession, skills, and food security.

Day three: Economic regeneration

Euan is joined by James Buck FRIN, Head of Marine Service and Transportation and Harbour Master, Orkney Islands Council Harbour Authority and Gareth Waterson, Corporate Director for Enterprise and Sustainable Regeneration at Orkney Islands Council, to discuss the impact the Orkney Harbours Masterplan will have on the future of the islands.

Firstly, Jamie Watt, a partner in our corporate, commercial and regulatory team, looks at some of the innovative practices in our marine economy, focusing on hydrogen production, Scottish aquaculture, and current higher education research programmes.
