As the countdown begins for the 20th International Island Games, Scottish Firm of the Year Harper Macleod is celebrating its 10-year anniversary providing legal advice to the islands by sponsoring Team Shetland as it prepares to compete in Orkney. This year’s event, which runs from 12th – 18th July, marks a major milestone, celebrating two decades of international island sport and community.

Team Shetland will comprise around 200 members, one of the largest to date, taking part in 12 different sports: archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, football, golf, gymnastics, lawn bowls, sailing, squash, swimming, and triathlon.

The Games are expected to attract between 2,500-3,000 visitors, making it the largest event Orkney has ever hosted. With 24 member islands participating and more than 2,000 competitors and officials involved, the Games are a celebration of sport, culture, and island identity. All participating island communities recognise the value of the Games, which not only promote a healthy lifestyle, but engage with young people and strengthen bonds across island communities.

Chris Kerr, lead partner for Harper Macleod in Lerwick, said:

“Supporting Team Shetland is always a source of pride for us at Harper Macleod. This is the fourth consecutive Games we have sponsored. The Island Games are more than just a sporting event, they are a celebration of community and island spirit. We’re proud to support Team Shetland and wish everyone the very best of luck.

“Our partnership is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to Shetland as we recognise how important sport and these Games are to the islands’ identity and impact on community spirit.

“It’s also special because this year marks 10 years since we opened our doors in Lerwick, and our commitment to Shetland is as strong as ever. With the support of our Shetland clients, we’re part of Team Shetland in more ways than one.”

Lesley Hutchison, chair of Shetland Island Games Association, said:

“We are delighted to have continued support from Harper Macleod for this year’s Island Games in Orkney. We’re grateful for this sponsorship which helps to reduce the financial barriers for our competitors to take part in the Games, which will showcase the best of island sport.”

This sponsorship reflects Harper Macleod’s long-standing commitment to supporting grassroots sport and community development across Scotland. The firm also sponsors Whalsay Football Club, the Glasgow Warriors professional rugby team, Highland Rugby and was a key partner and legal provider to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, highlighting its support for Scottish sport at every level.
