West Stand Warriors get a night to remember at first ever Harper Macleod fan extravaganza

  • Warriors legend Al Kellock, coach Dave Rennie, and players Huw Jones & DTH van der Merwe prove to be good sports

Glasgow Warriors fans who call the Harper Macleod West Stand home were treated to a fantastic night at Scotstoun Stadium this week, ahead of the big game against Saracens this weekend.

Held in the Harper Macleod Club Deck, where the club runs its matchday hospitality, around 100 West Stand supporters gathered for the exclusive event and were not disappointed.

With Warriors legend Al Kellock on the microphone, head coach Dave Rennie joined him for an half-hour Q&A session in which he gave an extremely candid insight into how the team is looking as they reach the business end of the season, and how they are set to take on and hopefully overcome the challenges ahead.

DTH van der Merwe gets animated during the quiz at the West Stand fan event

As every Warriors fan knows, the club has unfinished business with English giants Saracens having met them on numerous occasions over recent years. Those attending last night's event got a sneak preview of the kind of line-up Warriors will start with for the big match. And the coach also indicated that there will be a number of announcements on new recruits when the time is right!

The Q&A was followed by a highly entertaining Question of Sport style quiz, with four lucky supporters - Chris Milne, Stewart Black, Conor McErlean and Stephen Cullen - joining team captains Huw Jones and DTH van der Merwe in front of the audience.

Unsurprisingly, the players were as competitive in the quiz are they are on the field and it turned into a fierce but hilarious contest. Huw didn't know exactly what DTH stands for, while DTH had a conversation just before the quiz to thank for knowing that Huw wasn't born in Wales!

But, after five closely fought rounds, and plenty of mickey taking by Al 'Sue Barker' Kellock, in the end it was a victory for Canada over Scotland as Team DTH triumphed by 52 – 49.

The fans in attendance at the free event were also asked to help come up with an identity for the West Stand supporters, with the best suggestions winning a prize on the night. Watch this space for more on this as the idea is thrown open to the entire West Stand fanbase.
