Harper Macleod takes Judges Award of Merit and Litigation Team title at the Scottish Legal Awards 2017

Harper Macleod has lifted two prestigious titles at the Scottish Legal Awards 2017 – Litigation Team of the Year and the special Judges Award for Merit.

In front of a sell-out audience at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, Partners Sandy Hastie, John McHugh, Elaine Russell and Associate Laura McCorquodale collected the Litigation Team of the Year award from hosts Hardip Singh Kohli and Catriona Shearer.

Litigation Team Award

Harper Macleod has one of the largest teams of dispute resolution solicitors in Scotland, with more than half of its solicitors regularly involved in contentious work. As well as the core commercial litigation team, its dispute work includes insolvency, debt recovery, real estate and construction, banking and finance, personal injury and licensing, and sees it act in all sectors.

The firm was given the special Judges Award for Merit for its 10-year-long pro-bono association with the National Autistic Society (NAS) Scotland, through which it helps hundreds of families touched by autism get the educational support they need.

The expert judging panel, chaired by Shonaig Macpherson, was full of praise for Harper Macleod association with NAS, saying: "Every so often during the course of judging, the panel come across a case or a project which captures their attention and they believe may be worthy of an award in its own right. The Judges Award of Merit is this year presented to a firm which has delivered a 10-year commitment to a charity and delivered a phenomenal volume of work for the National Austistic Society’s Education Rights Service in Scotland."

Chief Executive Martin Darroch, who collected the Judges Award of Merit on behalf of the firm, said: "We made a decision more than a decade ago to make a long-term, sustainable commitment to a project that would really benefit families in Scotland and seeing the positive outcomes this has had for those families has been extremely rewarding for the firm. However, we're delighted that the work of the National Autistic Society's Education Rights Service has been recognised in this way, which again shines a light on the incredible service they provide.

"As one of Scotland's largest, independent full service practices, we're not always known purely as a 'litigation firm', however the breadth and depth of our expertise in dispute resolution is second to none. This award is welcome recognition of our position as leading litigators in Scotland and the specialist advice we provide in everything from corporate litigation to personal injury."

Harper Macleod was also one of the firms shortlisted for Law Firm of the Year, a title it has won more times than any other firm.
