Harper Macleod helps Scottish Hockey star chase career goals and a Glasgow 2014 medal as part of Search ACE programme

One of Scotland's hockey stars will combine her aspirations for a career in law with her Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games medal dreams thanks to a groundbreaking work placement programme.

Harper Macleod LLP, Legal Advisers to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, has teamed up with Search, one of the UK's leading recruitment agencies and a fellow Games sponsor and Official Supporter of Glasgow 2014, to provide Susan McGilveray with valuable work experience at the firm.

The Search Athlete Career Enhancement (ACE) programme sees athletes from across the UK and Northern Ireland given work placements with Official sponsors of the Games and businesses to help them develop life skills in parallel to their sporting aspirations.

McGilveray, a mainstay of the Scottish international hockey team in recent years, will take up the first two days of her work placement on October 16 and 17. The 25-year-old completed her legal studies at the University of Glasgow in 2011, but has put her career on hold as she tries to win a place in the Scottish ladies' medal chase at the Games.

She said: "The ACE programme is such a good idea. There are a lot of young people now who come out of university and take time out from their career to try to achieve in their sport. It's just fantastic that there is an opportunity to do both.

"I've had to put my career on hold until after the Games and do work which fits in around my training and playing commitments, as that's my priority at present. It's great to get this kind of support which will help me enormously when it comes to starting my legal career."

"I was really interested in sports law at university and that's one of the reasons why I'm so excited to be coming to work with Harper Macleod, who are well known as the leading sports law firm in the country. In the future it would be fantastic if I was able to combine my interest in sport with my career."

Martin Darroch, Chief Executive of Harper Macleod, said: "We take our role as Official Supporters of the Commonwealth Games, and Supporters of Team Scotland, very seriously, and were delighted to offer this opportunity to Susan. Search has set up a wonderful initiative, and any support that Scottish businesses can give to our athletes has to be embraced. We looking forward to giving Susan a taste of what life at a leading law firm is like, and I'm sure it will stand her in good stead when she begins her career after the excitement of Glasgow 2014."

Simone Lockhart, Managing Director of Search in Scotland, said: "As official recruitment agency to Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Search is delighted to be supporting athletes to benefit from exploring future career paths. So we're delighted that Susan has been offered a placement via our ACE programme at fellow Games Sponsor, Harper Macleod.

"We're positive that her experience will be inspirational and insightful and ensure that she is aware of all her potential career options in the future."

McGilveray, who stars for club side Milne Craig Clydesdale Western as well as the national team, is hoping she'll make the final 16 playing squad for the Games when it is selected next May.

She said: "It would be a career highlight just to be picked. A home Games is something few athletes get a chance to experience and I don't think you'd be able to beat that feeling.

"As a team, however, we're really looking to medal at the Games. We retained our place in the A Division in Europe this year, against a lot of top teams, many of whom will not be at the Games. We're certainly looking to progress from our group and after that who knows. There's no reason why not."
