Scottish EDGE is back with a vengeance! With the final line-up now announced, we are moving closer to finding out which businesses will scoop up the final prize at the final on 3 December this year. We can't wait.
Scottish EDGE sums up all that is great about Scottish entrepreneurialism, and is recognised as one of the biggest funding competitions in the UK. To date, EDGE has awarded over £14 million to over 350 Scottish businesses. In the last round, cash prizes of over £1 million were shared among just under 40 winners.
Not only are we looking forward to finding out who the winners are, but we're also being treated to a conversation between Theo Paphitis, entrepreneur and star of BBC's Dragons' Den series, and Sir Tom Hunter, the Scottish entrepreneur and long-time supporter of Scottish EDGE.
Theo's business empire spans retail, property, finance and consumer goods, so he is the perfect fit for speaker at the Scottish EDGE final as there will be such a varied array of fantastic businesses looking for advice on how to make it big.
Later on there will be another opportunity for guests to hear Theo in conversation with Scottish EDGE's chief executive officer Evelyn McDonald.
We are especially excited to hear from Theo as we are huge fans of Dragons' Den – take a look at our blogs covering each episode of the recent series.
Why Harper Macleod loves Scottish EDGE
Here at Harper Macleod, we absolutely love being a part of the Scottish Edge process. Why? Well, every time a new round of Scottish EDGE commences, we never cease to be amazed at the level of talent we have here in Scotland. It feels amazing to be a part of the Scottish entrepreneurial ecosystem and witness first hand just how much Scottish businesses have to offer.
Competitions such as this are incredibly important as they play a key role in highlighting Scottish entrepreneurs who are striving to make a difference in the world, as well as to the Scottish economy. Scottish EDGE is the UK's biggest funding competition for small businesses and it supports Scotland's most innovative, high-growth potential start-ups with up to £150,000 in cash. And as an added bonus, winners of Scottish EDGE can receive a support package from Harper Macleod which includes discounts of up to 50% on legal fees.
Having had a partnership with EDGE since its launch in 2012, sponsoring our own Harper Macleod Young EDGE award and also having advised Scottish EDGE since day one, we are well placed to advise growing businesses on key risk areas and to help put key documentation into place.
We have helped nearly 50% of Scottish Edge winners on issues including commercialisation, international expansion and fundraising. More importantly, we have worked with businesses to uncover the biggest risks - the unknown ones. Unknown risks cannot be anticipated and as a result it's impossible to manage them proactively and this is exactly where we can help out – offering practical advice to mitigate risks.
