With effect from 6th April 2016, you may be eligible for the new ‘marriage allowance, which could save you up to £212. Below are some quick pointers, which will determine your eligibility:
What is it?
Marriage Allowance allows non-taxpayers to transfer £1,060 of their personal allowance to their civil partner, husband or wife.
Who can apply?
You can get marriage allowance if:
• your partner’s income is between £10,601 and £42,385; and
• as the lower earner your income is below £10,600
What’s the saving?
£212 is the maximum saving.
The saving is achieved by the higher earner.
The maximum saving is calculated on maximum £1,060 allowances transferred where the lower earner has income of £9,540 or less.
