Sammi’s coach Ian Mirfin awarded MBE in New Year Honours list

Harper Macleod would like to congratulate Ian Mirfin, the coach of our athlete ambassador Samantha Kinghorn, and his wife Janice Eaglesham for being awarded MBEs for their services to disability sport.

Sammi And Ian

Ian and Janice together founded the Red Star Athletics Club in 1990, Scotland’s first specialist club for athletes with disability, and since then have helped transform the lives of hundreds of athletes including global medal winners such as wheelchair racer Sammi.

Janice is also the Chair of Scottish Disability Sport while Ian is the Paralympics lead for Scottish Athletics. Both prefer to avoid the limelight, focusing instead on their work but they have been instrumental in transforming disability sport in Scotland and this isn’t the first time their efforts have been recognised. In 2011 the duo picked up the Unsung Hero award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

You can find out much more about Ian and Janice and their work over the years in this excellent article in the Herald newspaper.
