Scottish EDGE finals - Paula Skinner reflects on a great day

Well, its many HM'ers favourite day of the year and it's over again for 2015 – the Scottish EDGE Final.

What a day!

We had an early start to head to RBS, Gogarburn but it was all worth it. It was fantastic to see such an amazing mix of passionate and entrepreneurial individuals in Scotland - it really is such an inspiring day. After more than 270 applications and a process involving over 90 judges, we watched the short listed 23 businesses pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges including Lord Willie Haughey, Dr Margaret Anne Craig, Bob Keiller and Les Matheson. The judges had such difficult decisions to make as it was so difficult to compare the businesses due to them being vastly different - from highland dance workouts to educational games to fish boxes to candles to software for the petroleum industry - we saw it all! Mike Crow of RBS kept everyone entertained with his ad libs but more importantly, ensured that everything ran on time - I think we were even ahead of schedule at one point. The breaks were good for networking but RBS, what happened to the pies?!! They had become a much a part of EDGE Final as the rain is in December. Please bring them back in June!

In true Eurovision style, we then headed over to Shanghai where Duncan Logan, Founder and CEO of Rocketspace, a Silicon Valley accelerator that has spawned 15 unicorns including UBER came through on Skype and gave us all some inspirational words.  He talked about passion and the importance of a team - to all the entrepreneurs in the room he said "You are not building the company - you are building the team that builds the company". I couldn't agree more. The team for any business is important but even more so for early stage businesses.

Then to the important part of the day - the winners! We have been working with almost half of the businesses pitching so we were slightly biased towards our clients but we couldn't be happier for all the winners. A huge £1.245m was given out to over 35 businesses with the big winners including Epipole, CargoSeat and AllDay Designs (all Harper Macleod clients!). Well done!!

Also some fantastic statistics about how much of an impact Scottish EDGE is making:

  • 130 companies supported to date
  • 479 new Scottish jobs
  • £21.6m additional turnover has been generated £18.7m external funding received

Scottish EDGE is a start up business itself so these figures are phenomenal and we're delighted to have been involved advising Scottish EDGE since it's roll out to the private sector. Well done team Scottish EDGE!

If you're thinking about applying to Scottish EDGE, DO IT! The winners some of whom have applied on numerous previous occasions are testament to the fact that you can get there if you keep trying.
