While on secondment with Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS), I had the opportunity to visit Frenich Hydro scheme in order to gain an understanding of the issues involved in hydro construction.
Frenich Hydro is a 730kW run-of-river scheme, located on the southern banks of Loch Tummel, Foss. It is a joint venture between Gilkes Energy (the developer) and the adjoining landowner. Half of the intake, an area measuring 13m x 9m, is situated on FCS land. Harper Macleod was instructed by FCS to draft the Lease agreement and to provide legal advice in relation to the project.
Construction began in April 2012. The scheme is expected to be operational in March 2013.
I first visited the scheme on 9 May 2012 and was invited back on 23 August to view the progress made over the summer months. Due to periods of dry weather in the region, the contractors have made good progress and are currently a few weeks ahead of schedule.
Many thanks to Gilkes for hosting my visits and to FCS for providing the secondment opportunity.
