Getting it done
We're renowned for our sports law practice, which is unparalleled in Scotland and among the leading practices in the UK. However we had never advised on a global multi-sports event before. Now we are part of an elite club of law firms who have a successful Games on their CV.
When Glasgow was awarded the Games back in November 2007 we knew we had to get involved, and we began working behind the scenes of the Games in September 2011 after winning a tough competitive tender to be appointed Legal Advisers to Glasgow 2014.
At that stage, there were still more than 1000 days to go until the Opening Ceremony, and they must go down as the fastest 1000 days in history.
To deliver the Games took teamwork of the highest order, both within Team HM itself and with Glasgow 2014 and other stakeholders. During that time a host of our people have played an important role, including six lawyers seconded to the Organising Committee's in-house legal team.

I knew that i could depend on Harper Macleod to support the executive, the legal team and the wider Games objectives and that they were very much 'in this with us' throughout the journey.Shonagh MacVicar, Head of Legal, Glasgow 2014
Team HM didn't win any medals, but it wasn't for a lack of effort. With around 40 lawyers acting on behalf of Glasgow 2014, including six full-time solicitor secondees based within Organising Committee, if Team HM had been a nation it would have been bigger than 40 of the actual 71 teams taking part.
Two key pillars of Harper Macleod are innovation and collaboration, and these qualities were put to the test like never before in our role with the Games. We pride ourselves with providing solutions, not just legal advice. But big challenges call for original solutions, and the talent and ingenuity of our people shone throughout the Games. It is a source of great pride that we played a key role in all aspects of the preparation and execution of the event.
Glasgow 2014 has been widely hailed as the greatest Commonwealth Games ever and is it a source of great pride that we played a key role in all aspects of the preparation and execution of the event.
We have always been driven to try harder than our competitors precisely because we are results driven and focused.
That last quality is one which we share with the very best athletes, and it's what drives the firm forward. And all these qualities were called upon – and tested to their limits – when the pressure mounted as the Games approached.
We believe that greatness begins behind the scenes, but it is proven under the glare of attention, and so it was.
