The Firm

HM community

We're determined to be good neighbours.

Three key principles. Three key stakeholders. We are serious about our corporate social responsibilities. In our work and conduct we try hard to apply these important principles:

  • To behave ethically
  • To contribute positively to our economic and natural environment
  • To improve the quality of life for our three main stakeholders

We have always understood that, both collectively and individually, we should seek to have a positive influence with the three groups of people with a stake in our business:

  • Our own people
  • The legal profession
  • The communities in which we have our roots

We're proud to have won the accolade for the Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy of the Year at the 2007 Scottish Legal Awards. And we were shortlisted for the Corporate Social Reponsibility Award at the 2007 National Business Awards.

Citizenship is about more than words.  We undertake a number of initiatives in the community and to address the environmental impact of our business. We use our skills and resources to support people in need and to improve access to justice. We encourage our Partners and staff to involve themselves in community projects. We provide a wide range of pro bono legal services to community and charitable organisations - tutoring, sponsoring and fundraising. And a number of our Partners sit on the governing bodies of charitable and not-for-profit bodies.

We enrich the skills of our profession. Harper Macleod is the only law firm in Scotland to have two of its senior Partners practicing as university professors - Professor Lorne Crerar and Professor Robert Rennie. Both teach at the University of Glasgow. And 7 of our lawyers lecture at the Glasgow's main universities.  We're also proud to encourage excellence by sponsoring the Commercial Banking (Honours) Prize at the Glasgow University Law School: it's awarded to the best student of the class in their year.
