Name: Craig McKerracher

Position: Solicitor

Department: Corporate Inverness

My first experience of Harper Macleod LLP was as a researcher in the summer between completing my degree and commencing the Diploma in Legal Practice.  Even then I was surprised by how the firm encouraged me to become involved in a variety of roles which I was capable of performing at that stage.

During the two years of my traineeship, I have been fortunate enough to have spent a few months at the very least in every one of the firm's main offices.  This has allowed me to develop a greater understanding of the firm's business as a whole.

From day one of your traineeship, the firm provides you with a lot of responsibility, which is constantly challenging.  I have never felt at any time that I am unable to approach one of my more senior colleagues to ask a question regarding something I am unsure of.  The firm has an open door policy and you will get to know the Partners on a first name basis.

The firm deals with high level quality work and I have been fortunate to work on some of the firm's biggest deals.

I was on secondment with a client between December 2006 and March 2007.  This is another indicator of the value the firm places upon its trainees, by making us ambassadors for the firm.  This gave me a great insight into the internal workings of the business of a client and how legal solutions should be tailored to meet those needs.

The firm is also a very sociable place.  It is an overused cliché, but "work hard, play hard" certainly applies to Harper Macleod LLP.  From individual department nights out, trainee weekends, office nights out to the bi-annual firm parties, there is always something going on at the firm and leads you to value those you work with at the firm not just as colleagues, but also as good friends.
