Harper Macleod Trainee Scoops European Employment Law Award

A trainee solicitor at commercial law firm Harper Macleod LLP has scooped a prestigious Europe - wide employment law award in Athens after submitting an impressive 20,000 word essay that the judging panel voted as being head and shoulders above the rest.

Shareen Auckbarallee, who joined the firm in 2003 after graduating from Strathclyde Universitys Law School, entered the competition for the first ever European Employment Lawyers Association Award by submitting an essay on the Working Time Directive and its interaction with national minimum wage legislation in the UK.   Her paper proved extremely timely, with controversy mounting around the European Parliaments decision to end the UKs opt-out.

As well as receiving a prize of five thousand Euros, Shareen has won membership of the EELA for one year.  She presented a paper at the EELA annual conference in Athens last week to over 350 delegates, summarising her 20,000-word paper.  As the only young lawyer in Scotland to attend the conference, Shareen is testament to Harper Macleods reputation for attracting and nurturing the cream of the Scottish legal profession

Shareen commented; "I am thrilled and extremely honoured to win the first ever European Employment Lawyers Association Award. It was a privilege to represent Harper Macleod at the Conference in Athens and I hope other young Scottish lawyers will be encouraged to participate in events of this kind in the future."
